Drew Brees returns to Purdue as interim assistant coach ahead of Citrus Bowl

Drew Brees is returning to the Boilermakers' sideline 18 days ahead of Purdue's Citrus Bowl contest against LSU.

Jeff Brohm recently left the program to become Louisville's new head coach, with his brother Brian taking over as the interim leader for the bowl game. Brian Brohm has served as the Boilermakers' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during his brother's entire tenure beginning with the 2017 campaign.

It was also reported Thursday that Purdue senior quarterback Aidan O'Connell would be skipping the bowl game and entering the NFL Draft.

Prior to Brees' legendary NFL career in which he earned 13 Pro Bowl honors and won a Super Bowl MVP, he played four seasons for the Boilermakers from 1997 to 2000. Brees finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1999 and third in 2000 and was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 1998 and 2000.

The 43-year-old retired from the NFL season following the 2020 season and spent the 2021 campaign as an analyst for "Sunday Night Football."

"Purdue University is fortunate to have alumni who are impactful leaders in industries and careers across a wide spectrum, including professional football," vice president and director of athletics Mike Bobinski said. "For more than two decades, Drew Brees has shown the world what makes the Boilermakers special. He was an elite football player, but most of all, Drew is an extraordinary leader. Gaining his insights on the football field and in our coaching offices during this time of transition will be of great value to our student-athletes and staff.  We're grateful to Drew for his willingness to share his time and expertise in yet another show of support for the Boilermakers."
