Broncos' Russell Wilson kept receipts after disastrous 2022 season

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson heard and read what critics had to say about his disastrous 2022 season and is prepared to offer responses in the event he reclaims his best form this fall.

"I think you’ve got them in your back pocket sometimes," Wilson said when asked after practice if he keeps figurative "receipts," per Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette.

Wilson earned nine Pro Bowl nods while with the Seattle Seahawks from 2012 through the 2021 season but largely looked well past his prime during his first campaign with the Broncos. The 34-year-old also reportedly annoyed at least some teammates with his antics before, during and after games, and it's widely believed new head coach Sean Payton could bench Wilson during the club's bye in Week 9 if the veteran fails to impress throughout the first half of this season.

Wilson said last month he welcomes the undeniable pressure hovering over his career even though he put pen to paper on a five-year contract extension reportedly worth $245M with $165M guaranteed last September. Payton wasn't with the organization when that agreement was signed and likely cares little about it.

"I’m used to some of those who believe and some of those who doubt, and I think that when you’re playing high stakes and you dream to be the best you can possibly be every day, there’s always going to be people that question whether you can do it or not," Wilson said about his mindset. "And I think I’ve proven that throughout my career what I can do and I got to do it again."

Interestingly, Wilson also joined the long list of players who have declined to participate in the second season of Netflix's "Quarterback" docuseries.

"I’m focused on right now," Wilson said about that decision.

Denver opens the season with a home game against the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday. As of Thursday afternoon, OddsChecker listed the Broncos as the favorites (-180, -3.5) to win that contest.
