James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

USA Hockey named Mike Sullivan their head coach for the 2025 4 Nations Cup squad, as well as the 2026 Olympic team.

“I am beyond grateful to  have the opportunity to coach Team USA in these two significant international events,” Sullivan said. “It’s been amazing to see the progress we’ve made in hockey in our country over the course of my career. I am honored to lead our best players and I look forward to the challenge that lies ahead.”

The 56-year-old has spent 11 seasons as an NHL head coach, spending two seasons with the Boston Bruins in 2003-04 and 2005-06, and nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins between 2015-2024.

“We’re excited to have Mike guiding our teams,” USA Hockey General Manager Bill Guerin said in a press release. “He is one of the very best coaches in the game and his background, including with international hockey, is well-suited to help put our team in the best position to win.”

Through his 11 seasons as a head coach in the NHL, he has a 445-275-115 record. He won two Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017.

“Mike Sullivan is not only a great coach, but someone who has a strong passion for American hockey,” USA Hockey Executive Director Pat Kelleher said. “He’s a world-class leader and been an important part of hockey in our country for a very long time.”

He’s spent parts of five decades with USA Hockey. As a player, he was a member of the 1988 U.S. National Junior Team, and was a member of the 1997 World Championship roster. As a coach, Sullivan was an assistant at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and with the 2006 Olympic team. He was also the head coach of the 2007 World Championship team, and an assistant with the 2007 World Championship squad.
